History and Genealogy of the Jewetts of America by Frederic Clarke Jewett. Published in 1908. .Our exploration into the early origins of our family leaves off here for the time being. Until we have an opportunity to delve into it deeper, there is an existing body of research available that is quite comprehensive. At the heart of it is a treatise by Frederic Clarke Jewett entitled "History and Geneaology of the Jewitts of America." Here he discusses in great detail our shared early history, and then branches off to his own line featuring Deacon Maximilian and Joseph Jewett, settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts, in 1639. This branch of the family -- The Jewett Family of America, Inc. -- is very active with reunion meetings and research. They maintain an extensive website where t-shirts, mugs, hats and tote bags with the Jewitt coat of arms may in fact be purchased. (Christmas gifts anyone?!) They even have a FaceBook page.
There is another very good website out there called Jowett Variations, managed by a Dave Jowitt out of Cheshire, England. There is quite a bit of good information there about our family origins -- interestingly, some of it is a little different from what Jewett Family of America has. In any case, it too branches off to other lines of the family, but it contains a lot of hard-won research information that is well worth examining. With these excellent resources covering the very beginnings of our Jewitt heritage, rather than repeat the information, it seems more appropriate to follow their lead and with our next post, move on to our own lines of the family tree....
